In the evolution of the genus Homo (as in Homo Erectus, Homo Neandertalensis, and Homo Sapiens), the upright individual would have had his hands free AND his brain sufficiently developed around 50,000 to 100,000 years ago, for this kind of development to have occurred. But that's still conjecture, just a guess.
