The Golden Fleece originally comes from the winged ram, Chrysomallos, in Greek mythology. This ram was sent by the god Hermes to rescue Phrixus and Helle, the children of King Athamas. After the ram sacrificed itself, Phrixus dedicated its fleece to Zeus and hung it in a grove guarded by a dragon in Colchis, where it became the object of the quest undertaken by Jason and the Argonauts.
