Our last name directly originates from Germany and most likely you are a descendent of George Fruits who immigrated to the American colonies in the mid 1700s. In Germany our last name was either Frutz or Frits and the spelling got corrupted. However, we were not German natives rather refugee French Huguenots that were killed and persecuted by Louis XIV because we were Protestant.
Also an interesting historical note George Fruits and his son George Fruits Jr both fought the the American revolution. Sr. is known as George "flag-bearer" Fruits and his son is know as George "alamo" Fruits. If you will do a google search for George Fruits you will find out Jr. Lived to 114 making him the oldest veteran of the American revolution dying in 1869 after the civil war. On the web there is some dispute over this but like most thing on the web it is not 100% accurate. My grandfather was really into genealogy and I have a copy of an article run on this in Indiana news paper and a book that traces our family lineage up to about 1980. I am 6 generations removed from George Fruits.
