No the Spanish actually defeated Aztecs and the Mayans but althogh they always faught but mayans did not deafeat the Aztecs /// <-- That´s not true: The Mayas were an ancient culture that lasted from year 2000 to 1546 and the Aztecs (Better known as "Mexicas") lived from 1325 to 1521 (our age). They were two separated cutures located in two completely different places, not even near from each other and as far as it is known they never fought (they did´NT have a reason to do so).
They were actual first known as and still refered to as The Purepecha'. the name of Tarascan was given to the indingenous by the Spanish Conquistadors when they surrendered in fear of a brutal take over like that of the Aztecs.

The "sad night" for Hernán Cortés refers to the events surrounding the fall of Tenochtitlan in 1521 when he and his forces faced significant resistance from the Aztecs. After initially conquering the city, the Spanish were besieged and suffered heavy losses during their retreat in what is known as La Noche Triste ("The Sad Night") in July 1520. Many Spaniards and their allies were killed, and Cortés experienced a profound sense of loss and defeat. This night marked a turning point in the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire, illustrating the challenges of their campaign.
