The pax romana occurred when Rome expanded her empire. It means the 'peace of Rome', ie the peace of living under the protection of Rome, and sharing in the benefits it had to offer, such as stable government, protection from internal and external invasion and piracy, increased urbanization and prosperity, amenities, adequate food and water supply etc. While the Roman attention to stable government meant that these benefits began to be felt from the 2nd Century BCE, it is generally accepted to start in the late 1st Century BCE when Augustus decided to stop expansionism and extablish defendable borders. Although the empire came under increasing internal stability and external attack and attrition, maintenance of peace, stability and prosperity, remained the basis for the empire, lingering on umtil its eventual demise in the eastern half until 1453 CE.The Pax Romana lasted from 27 BC to 180 AD. it marked the end of the pax romana (200 years of roman peace set by the first roman emperor).
The Pax Romana ended because the Roman state had ceased to grow. Boundaries had been set for the Roman Empire, and for the first time the army had become a drain on the economy of Rome. Until this point the army provided new slaves and riches from conquered countries. Only about 4% of Romans were middle class and the wealthy raised the taxes on the lower classes to strengthen their own living standards, which lead to rebellion. After the death of Marcus Aurelius [the last great Roman Emperor] came a succession of poor leaders, and so began not only the end of the Pax Romana but also the fall of the Roman Empire.
The Pax Romana started before the birth of Christ and continued well after his death. It was a 207 year period of relative political stability in the Roman empire which historians set as beginning in 27 BC and ending in 180 AD.

An end to the civil wars, with a guided oligarchical system of government. Relative peace. Stable, defensible boundaries to the Roman Empire. Effective control of the armies. Read his own testament in the attached link below.
Augustus decided to set limits to the empire, using defined and defensible borders (eg the Rhine and Danube Rivers). and coming to terms with neighbouring states where there there was no such border. Within these borders he engaged with peoples and tribes, bringing them to be part of the empire and sharing its security and prosperity..Hence the term Pax Romana - Roman peace. He also promoted social harmony, avoided acting like a king (knowing what happened to Julius Caesar), exercising control in the background, calling himself First Citizen, and sharing power with the Senate. His object was to promote the well-being of the empire, and security and prosperity were the foundations of that.
During the Pax Romana, travel was possible, and missionaries (who spread Christianity to non-believers) felt comfortable and safe when using the roads, and could spread their message without fear of attack. There were open routes throughout the Empire, and people were more interested in learning the teachings of Christ during a time of peace than they would be during a war or famine- it was big news. Pretty much everyone spoke the same language at the time, as well, so the missionaries could preach easily to the people. After the Pax Romana, Christianity was the official state religion. Wherever the Romans dominated, they established Christianity.
The Pax Romana (Roman peace) was a 200 year period of relative political stability in the Roman Empire. This stability encouraged the development of thriving trading networks around the four corners of the empire which was unparalleled for many centuries after the end of Roman civilisation.
