The Spaniards were the first Europeans to use African slaves in the New World on islands such as Cuba and Hispaniola, where the native population starved themselves rather than work for the Spanish. Although the natives were used as forced labor, the spread of disease caused a shortage of labor, and so the Spanish colonists gradually became involved in the Atlantic slave trade.

When the encomienda system ended in 1542, the colonies' need for labor still had to be met. To meet the colonies need for labor, Las Casas suggested Africans. "The labof of one [...African...is] more valuable than that of four Indians," he said.
Bartolomé de Las Casas did not advocate for the enslavement of Africans in Spain. In fact, he was strongly opposed to the enslavement and mistreatment of indigenous people in the Spanish colonies as well. Las Casas proposed the idea of importing African slaves instead of using indigenous people as a means to protect the rights and well-being of the indigenous populations.
