His mother, Hera, was surprised that Zeus "gave birth to" Athena and Dionysus on his own. She instantly gave birth to Hephaestus. But he was so ugly, she threw him off Mt. Olympus.( some stories say that Zeus threw him off because he sided with Hera in an argument) He was then found and nursed back to health by Thetis, a sea nymph. He got his revenge by making a throne and when Hera sat in it she was captured in it. The other gods then persuaded him to let her go by offering Aphrodite in marrige. Since she was so beautiful, he agreed.
Aphrodite became married to Hephaestus because Zues knew that the other Gods would fight over Aphrodite....so he gave her hand to Hephaestus in marriage.
Hephaestus was Zeus's son. Hephaestus is the son Zeus and Hera. Sometimes it is said that Hera alone gave birth to Hephaestus, without male fertilization.
Zeus and Hera had Ares. Along with Hephaestus and Hebe.
Zeus asked Hephaestus to create a woman made of clay to bring sorrow to mortal men.
Zeus had multiple human women lovers, but never had a wife. This made Hera mad, and is why she gave birth to Hephaestus.
