What happened is legend (a traditional story believed to be true), about which we know very little other than the traditional story sung by the bards, which had been built up out of their imagination over centuries, and was subject to endless changes and additions after one of their versions was written down after writing was invented. What grains of real fact are contained in the stories we don't know.
