No Roman men could be forced to fight for public amusement. Roman men were citizens, and the only time they got in the arena was for a "fun thing" such as under the emperor Nero. You are perhaps thinking of the gladiators who were slaves or prisoners of war or even disgraced citizens who actually lost citizenship when they sold themselves to a gladiatorial school.
