Acrisius, concerned that he will not have a son to take over the kingdom after him, goes to Delphi to find out if he would have a proper heir. The prophecy he receives is not the one he was hoping to hear. His beautiful daughter would have a son who would eventually grow up to kill him. Fearful of such a prophecy, he was determined to try to change his fate, so he locked his daughter Danae in a bronze house sunken under the ground, but could not kill her outright because of his devotion to her. Later, after Danae has given birth to Perseus, he puts Danae and her newborn son in a chest and throws them out to sea. This, again, does not kill her and his grandchild directly, but rather puts them in immense danger, but this time in fear of the wrath of Zeus and the Furies.
