No. Horses are herd animals and love equine company. Should you not be able to provide this, here are some things that can help:

-Sheep

-Dogs

-Cats

-Leave a radio playing (horses HATE silence)

However none of these are alternatives, just supplements. I really wouldn't consider getting a horse unless you can offer it company. Livery yards are places where you pay to keep your horse there. As well as having access to the yard's facilities, the horse will have plenty of friends!

How do horses act when they are alone?

Horses are social animals. They usually want to be around other horses. When alone for a short while, they may call for the others if there are any other horses in a barn or in a far away pasture. Some may pace by the fence, (if in a pasture,) and whinny to others. If in a stall, they may become very noisy. If they are left alone for an extremely long time, they might crib or start a different bad habit. Hope that helped. =3

Would a horse rather be alone or with another horse?

Horses are herd animals, and thus prefer to be with other horses than be alone. It's the reason that they're herd animals that they will quickly bond with a human when they are alone with that human and that human, being a horse trainer or owner, is trying to gain their trust.
