Can koalas bite

Koalas can and will bite if they feel threatened. They also have long claws that can scratch you. Koalas are not very dangerous, but they are also wild animals. Just because they look cute and cuddly does not mean that they cannot injure you.

Koalas are generally placid creatures and do not normally bother to bite people. If cornered or captured, they are more likely to use their sharp claws in defence.

Kangaroos also do not bite if cornered, striking out instead with their sharp clawed strong back legs.

There are always exceptions.

Recently in Australia, there have been several reports of kangaroo attacks - seriously. In one, a kangaroo was startled near a dam on a man's property while he was walking his dog. The dog took off after the kangaroo, which turned and grabbed the dog and literally held it under water, forcing the farmer to enter the dam to save his dog. The kangaroo then turned on the man, biting and kicking at him, while he was trying to keep his dog above water. The farmer had to deliver a hefty punch before the kangaroo turned and fled.

In another recent case, a boy in a schoolyard was attacked by a wallaby - a smaller relative of the kangaroo - while innocently playing. He was scratched and bitten.

Even more recently, in July 2011, a 94 year old woman was hanging out washing in her backyard in the small town of Charleville, western Queensland, when a big Red bounded out of the bush and attacked her without reason, causing her to be hospitalised. During the process, it certainly left some decent bite marks in her leg. It transpired later that the Red had escaped from the enclosure of a local wildlife carer, and was still suffering considerable pain from an earlier injury.

These cases serve as a warning - kangaroos, like all wild animals, are unpredictable.
