Not directly. "Grow up" is a vague and inexact term. Does it mean full size? Sexual maturity? Independence from any need for parental care? In any case, you have asked a very complex question, which is probably best answered 'sometimes'. Darwinian natural selection is the primary vehicle through which various traits develop, but this topic is not easily explained in a short answer.
Obviously, animals with short life spans must reach sexual maturity quickly. There are, however, many animals with long life spans and a short juvenile period. Many reptiles, especially turtles, have brief juvenile periods, but very long lives. One factor that favors a brief period of immaturity is vulnerability to predation. A factor which mitigates, or reduces the effect of this kind of vulnerability is protection provided by adults. Humans are the best example of this. Long childhoods allow humans to learn complex skills.
On the other hand, brief juvenile periods are common among more primitive creatures, but such species are usually born with complex instinctual patterns that make survival possible. Reptiles and fishes are examples. Some fish live at least as long as humans, as do many reptiles, and these creatures receive little or no parental care. More advanced creatures, including humans, bears, lions, whales, etc., have extended periods of parental dependence, without which survival is impossible. It is interesting to consider the fact that humans in primitive circumstances frequently had life spans that averaged less than 40 years: long enough to reproduce and bring the next generation to a level of self-sufficiency and sexual maturity, all that nature requires.

Usually if a person is kind to an animal it means they have respect for life and a deep understanding (whether conscious or not) that anything which can grow breathe and sleep is somehow special. And more often than not those that are kind to animals are kind to people.
