By being loving, supportive, and rewarding your pet when it does what you want. This is called "positive reinforcement." But you may need to break down the behavior into simpler steps. For example, to get the pet to"fetch the ball" you may have to first teach "fetch" and then the meaning of "ball" (as opposed to "stick" for example).

And, since behaviors can be forgotten, you will need to make sure your pet performs the behavior every few days to keep it "fresh."
