Haliclona, like all sponges, are filter feeders, pumping water through their pores with cilia and past cells which catch food particles. If a sponge is chimney shaped, the flow of water comes in through the tiny outer pores (called ostia), joins up with the flow in the middle, and exits through the large chimneys (oscula).
