A vulture is a scavenger. It fullfills a very useful role, namely dispending with dead bodies. They are adapted to that task by having long bald necks that enable them to dig deep into a carcass without getting stuck with their heads: if there were feathers there, their normal direction would otherwise make it easy to dig in, but very difficult to get your head out again.
