Flooding makes things incredibly difficult when it comes to animal husbandry. Besides losing animals via drowning or being swept away by the high waters, there is also the need to move animals to higher ground and keep them there during the flood itself. Feed needs to be moved to higher ground as well in order to keep the animals well-fed, and often such feed may need to be moved to the animals by boat in order to be able to feed them. Otherwise, if the feed is under water, there is no food for them and they may starve if feed from outside the flood-affected area is not brought in.

The water itself is often dirty and brings in bacteria, viruses and fungi that can cause major illnesses and diseases in animals that are susceptible to such illnesses.
