As you might expect, the Sun's energy is depleted as it moves through a food chain in any environment. The organisms that capture energy directly from the Sun always have the most energy content, or in a predator prey scenario, the most nutrients. On land plants are eaten by herbivores allowing them to get the most rich and concentrated energy and nutrition. This is why herbivores tend to be the LARGEST organisms, not only on land but in the ocean as well. They get tons of energy without have to do a lot of work. Now as you move down the food chain this energy becomes more and more diluted. Animals that are predators (carnivores in particular) have had to adapt to either be smaller, eat more frequently, reduce their metabolisms, etc. In fact, the Sun's energy is so quickly depleted as it moves through the food chain that in any ecosystem there are few examples of more than about 5 steps in the food chain. Here's some examples: plankton use sunlight, small organisms eat plankton, small fish like sardines eat them, large fish like tuna eat them, and sharks eat the tuna. Yes you could argue human then eat sharks but we eat at will and thus the need for energy isn't a factor.

How is energy transferred through a food chain?

How is energy transferred in the biosphere?

Energy in the biosphere is transferred through food chains and food webs. Producers, such as plants, capture energy from the sun through photosynthesis. This energy is then passed on to consumers as they eat other organisms.

What is transeferred from producers to consumers and decomposers through food chains?

Energy is transferred in a food chain. It starts with plants absorbing energy from the sun. It is then transferred up through the food chain by animals that eat plants which are, in turn, eaten by carnivore's.

How is energy transferred through a Eco system?

Energy is transferred in an ecosystem through a food chain or food web. Producers (plants) capture sunlight and convert it into chemical energy through photosynthesis. This energy is passed on to consumers (animals) when they eat the producers or other consumers. Decomposers break down dead organisms and waste, releasing the stored energy back into the ecosystem.

What information does an energy pyramid show?

An energy pyramid shows the flow of energy through different trophic levels in an ecosystem. It illustrates how energy is transferred from producers to primary consumers, secondary consumers, and so on, with each level representing a decrease in energy as it is transferred up the food chain.

How is energy transfered between organisms?

Energy transfers between organisms by making a animal eat a plant which gets it energy so then other animals eat that energy having animal. So that's how energy is transferred between organisms.

Describe how energy transferred between livings things?

Energy is transferred between living things through food chains and food webs. Producers, such as plants, convert sunlight into energy through photosynthesis. This energy is then passed on to consumers when they eat the producers or other consumers. Energy is continually transferred as organisms are consumed, broken down, and used for growth, movement, and other metabolic processes.

How does energy go through the ecosystem of producers to consumers?

It decreases by 10%. A producer has 100% to start with, when an animal such as a deer eats the grass, shrub, flower, ect it only actually gets 10% of the energy. When a tiger eats a deer, the tiger is only getting 1% of the original energy, and so on.

How energy is transferred in a terrestrial environment?

In terrestrial environments, energy is transferred through the food chain. Producers (plants) convert sunlight into chemical energy through photosynthesis. This energy is then passed on to consumers (animals) as they eat the plants or other animals. Energy is continually transferred as organisms consume each other, with some energy lost as heat at each step.

How can energy be transferred through the atmosphere?

Energy is transferred through the atmosphere by radiation.

What percentage of the energy flowing through primary producers is ultimately transferred to secondary comsumers?

On average, about 10% of the energy from primary producers is transferred to secondary consumers. This is due to energy loss at each trophic level through respiration, heat loss, and incomplete digestion.
