Alligators can run at speeds of up to 11 miles per hour (about 18 kilometers per hour) on land over short distances. However, they are primarily adapted for swimming, where they are much more agile and can reach speeds of around 20 miles per hour (32 kilometers per hour) in the water. Despite their speed, alligators usually prefer to ambush prey rather than chase it.
