How long until a cat returns home if it decides to run away?

They normally come home when they are hungry. If it has been anything more than a few days, you might want to start looking. Try not to worry too much though, sometimes they will disappear for weeks at a time!

This depends greatly on the cat's circumstances. Generally, this falls into three groups:

1. Within a week. If a cat is not led far away from the house, he will generally return to it within a few days. You can help by laying out a trail of his favorite cat food, but be sparing: you don't want to attract raccoons or rats, do you?

2. After a few months or years. If a cat strays far enough away from home that he can't find his way back, he may be adopted by another family. Particularly if your cat is microchipped, he may be identified as yours when the new family takes the cat in for vet care; the cat's ear tattoo can also identify him. Be certain you have updated your home address with the vet that put in the microchip or the tattoo.

3. Never. Cats, unfortunately, are quite often killed by urban carnivores like coyotes and (surprisingly) raccoons, and can also get trapped in construction areas or sewers, or hit by cars. The average life span of a cat with free access to the outdoors is about four years; a cat confined to the house generally will live to be fifteen to eighteen years old.

depends, if it liked its home and was loved there it might come home when it gets hungry, if someone else is feeding it then it might not come back, it just really depends

If your cat loves your home, and wants to stay, they probably won't go very far. But if they have been plotting an escape, because they don't like their place, then they can go really far.
