5 to 10 dollars a cow in 1850 in the southern United States. Livestock could go for as much as 20 times that amount in California due to the gold rush. I'm not sure but cattle may have been significantly more in 1866 as this was a peak time in cattle drives to the north and western states.

The center gate in a livestock trailer is used to divide the load and help keep the livestock from moving around too much. The gate is also useful for working the livestock and basically create a very confined pin for applying medication, ID tags, etc.
