Echidna. Sure, it's a monotreme, a kind of primitive mammal that lays eggs. It's Linnean name is tachyglossa, which means "quick tongue." It's also called the spiny anteater. It's only a cat-sized animal, but it's named for a mythical monster. (Maybe that's why you though it might not be a real animal.)
