Bears, in fact, do not technically hibernate. They go into a deep sleep, but they can (and do) wake up occasionally, and may even leave the den. Animals such as marmots are classic examples of hibernators. Marmots lower their body temperature to just above freezing through the long alpine winter, thereby conserving energy. During this time, their heart rate is about one or two beats a minute.
