A thistle is a plant that has sharp spines on it. There are certain types of finches and doves that eat it, as well as goats.
Plants that are commonly found around yellow star thistle include annual grasses like wild oats and barley, as well as perennial grasses such as purple needlegrass. Other common plants in these habitats are forbs like milk thistle, wild radish, and California poppy. These plants have adapted to the same ecological conditions as the yellow star thistle, allowing them to coexist in the same environment.

There are a number of symbols that one can associate with Scotland - the thistle, the lion rampant and the St Andrews Cross Flag (or Saltire) to name a few. The main symbol is probably the Thistle as it has been an important Scottish Symbol for over 500 years. Legend says that a group of Scots were woken when a viking raider stood on a thistle prior to an attack, however, there is little evidence if any to support this.
