Wild horses travel in herds with many females and one male. If another male is introduced to the herd the two stallions will fight until one is determined superior and the other leaves. When the stallion chooses a mare to breed with, if she is in heat, he will mount her flanks and penetrate her using her back as support. On occasions where the female is not in heat often she will try to fight him off by bucking or rearing at him with her hooves. In some cases a male becomes aggressive even with a willing female and will bite their ears and leave scaring on the mare while he has mounted her. Normally a stallion can tell when a mare is in heat or when he needs to give her space and wait. When a mare wants attention she will prance about holding her tail high often times whinnying and nickering. A stallion is almost always in heat and is ready to breed whenever the chance arises.
