Because much of its diet consists of birds, if they get the chance to run they can take off, but if the fox is quick enough it can catch the slow ones. It also eats small animals, many of these live in burrows, so again if it is too slow in approaching they get a headstart to run for cover.
It means - usually the strongest, fastest, or best climber will survive over similar animals that are weaker. If an animal is fast, strong or a good climber - it has a better chance of evading predators.
