The Hoatzin bird is a herbivore, feeding on a variety of vegetation such as arum leaves, mangroves and other swamp vegetation. They prefer young shoots and leaves. Hoatzin are unusual as their digestive system ferments the vegetation they eat - rather like a cow's digestive system does. Hence, they can be known as the "stink bird" because they exude an unpleasant odour.
