Rabbit and hares are similar animals, and sometimes the words are used interchangeably (for example, jackrabbit are technically hares, not rabbits), but there are some differences between hares and rabbits:

Rabbits give birth to furless babies; hares are born covered with fur.

Hares usually have longer ears and longer back legs.

Hares are more desert creatures and rabbits are more temperate creatures.

There is not really any difference at all. The only difference is that humans didn't feel like calling hares (Wild rabbits) rabbits, they wanted a wild rabbit and a pet rabbit to have different names so that everybody would know, and realize the tiny difference! One is wild and the other is a pet! I guess that that's how its ought to be!
