A female stonefish lays 50,000 to 100,000 eggs in a ditch from June to August when the water temperature is about 20C. A male stonefish comes and fertilizes the eggs by releasing the sperm over them.

In about 2 months, they are from 1-2 cm long and their pectoral fins (chest fins) turn orange. This is also the time where cannibalism happens. Some of the larger stonefish may accidentally eat the smaller ones.

When they reach the length of 3cm, cannibalism stops. Also, their orange color fades away and becomes yellow. After that, black spots appear which lightens and turns gray like the color of a stone.

It takes 3 years for a stonefish to mature which is a long time compared to other fish. When they are fully grown, they are from 800grams to 1kg.
