Switchbacks can be dangerous due to their sharp turns and steep gradients, which can increase the risk of losing control for vehicles, especially in adverse weather conditions. They often require drivers to navigate tight corners without a clear view of oncoming traffic, leading to potential collisions. Additionally, cyclists and pedestrians may be at risk if they are not visible to drivers approaching a switchback. The combination of limited visibility and sharp angles necessitates heightened caution for all road users.
Switchbacks are zigzagging paths that hikers use to ascend or descend steep terrain gradually. They help reduce the steepness of the trail, making it easier and safer for hikers to navigate. Switchbacks can impact the hiking experience by making the trail longer but less strenuous, allowing hikers to enjoy the scenery and avoid fatigue.
