It is an audio form of radar - the ability to tell the size and distance of object by listening to the echoes they produce. Bats use it in the air. Dolphins, porpoises and whales use it under water.

How is an echo different from echolcation?

Whilst echoes are sound waves bouncing off, echolocation is when a sound is brought out by a predator, and they sense how it echoes. Through this way, predators, like the bat, can find the location of their prey without using eyesight.
