At that time it was a "double monastery" with both monks and nuns, under an Abbess. Viking attacks over a prolonged period left this monastery in ruins for over 200 years.The Norman knight Reinfrid (or Regenfrith) established a new monastery on the site in 1078 on the orders of William de Percy. It is the ruins of the Norman Abbey which can be seen today - no trace of the Saxon monastery remain above ground.
