His father, Nils Ingemarsson Linnaeus, was a gardener and a Protestant pastor. Linnaeus began his studies at the University of Lund in 1727 to study medicine. One year later, he transferred to the acclaimed University of Uppsala, in Sweden. He went to the Netherlands in 1735 and completed his medical degree at the University of Harderwijk.
