Baby harp seals, known as pups, are primarily cared for by their mothers. After giving birth, the mother nurses the pup for about 12 days, providing it with nutrient-rich milk to help it gain weight and develop a thick layer of blubber for insulation. Once the pup is weaned, the mother leaves to mate and does not return, leaving the pup to fend for itself as it learns to swim and hunt.
