Dogs are bred from Wolves. Wolves only are only fertile once per year, and a strong pack hierarchy ensures that, usually, only the alpha pair in a wolf pack breeds, maintaining a low, stable rate of growth.

Dogs were bred for a variety of purposes, including hunting, herding, pest control and war. Man needed to be able to breed dogs faster, and the trait that makes dogs fertile throughout the year was thus desirable and incorporated into dogs. Further, the tendancies of wolves, including strong pack bonds, were changed rather significantly; humans became the dominant pack leaders but did not act as pack alphas would; pack alphas would instill strong, resolute discipline to prevent the lower-ranking pack members from breeding; humans do not abide by this.

Physically, dogs are much shorter-lived than humans (10-15 years versus 75 years), have shorter gestation periods (2 months compared with 9 months), and have litters of several pups whereas humans normally only have one baby at a time.
