Most logs float because the density is less than that of water . (One cubic centimeter of wood weighs (has less mass) less that one cubic centimeter of water (or liquid in which it is placed). However given a LONG time is water, logs can become "waterlogged", soaked through with water and their density becomes greater that of water and they sink.

Can a log float above a water surface?

Yes, a log can float on water if its density is less than that of water. Logs are typically buoyant because they have a lower density than water, allowing them to float on the surface.

What are the materials that can float in water and are waterproof and light in nature?

Why do crocodiles float like logs?

Crocodiles are able to float like logs due to their low-density bodies and thick, buoyant skin. They have a large lung capacity that helps them stay afloat, and their limbs are positioned on their sides to reduce water resistance, allowing them to glide effortlessly through the water.

Do things float in alcohol?

Yes. For every fluid, there are things that float in it ... they just have to be things that are less dense than the fluid. That's how stones float in mercury, logs float in water, and hot balloons float in air.

How does a kayak float?

A makeshift raft floats by virtue of the bouyancy of the materials used to build it. The builder makes it out of stuff that floats. Given a choice, it would be better to make it out of logs rather than rocks, because logs generally float, and rocks generally don't.

What is a raft?

There are two kinds of rafts. One is an inflatable plastic raft that you fill with air. However, the more historical meaning of raft is a humanly constructed platform which floats. People normally cut down trees to use logs, because logs float. They needed to tie the logs together with vines, twine, or rope. If tied correctly, the platform of logs would float long enough to cross a river, for example. It can also be the source of a great story. My friends and I had quite possibly the best trip down river ever when we built a homemade raft. Check out the link How to Build a Raft-How to Make a Homemade Raft in the related links section to read about my story.

What is a logjam?

Logjam is a word coined in Canada. The timber industry float thousands of cut logs down rivers; the cheapest and most efficient way to transport them. Logs will naturally follow the line of the river and be in line with it. A logjam occurs when too many logs try to get through a narrows at the same time or when logs turn sideways in the river after hitting a bank or rock etc causing the following logs to become tangled up. The word has come to mean any blockage to the normal flow; be it data, information, luggage or anything at all. logjam is also one of the rides in enchanted kingdom

How does the log flume work?

The log flume is just a little engineered "river" to float the logs down an incline in. The flumes were mostly built of wood, and they extended for miles. There were some people who rode the logs along these flumes! A link is provided to the Wikipedia article on the log flume, and there is a nice pic from back in the day.
