The U.S. flag is often considered a living thing because it represents the values, history, and spirit of the nation and its people. It embodies concepts like freedom, democracy, and unity, evolving with the country over time. Additionally, the flag is treated with deep respect and reverence, and its symbolism is interwoven with the collective identity and experiences of Americans, making it feel dynamic and alive in the hearts of citizens.
As copied from http://www.usflag.org. More specifically the exact page is, http://www.usflag.org/uscode36.html#180 "...The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart."
On Memorial Day the US Flag is lowered to half staff only until noon to honor the war dead of all US wars. The Flag is raised to full staff at noon to show that the nation lives. The US Flag is considered to be a living entity representing a living nation. This is stated in the US Code, Title 36, Chapter 10 § 176.
It can be considered anything. It can also represent patriotism to the extreme. In order to be alive, it must be capable of replicating itself. Flags are not alive. The country on the other hand does grow although it can theoretically also lose population. The code says it is alive, but biologically it cannot be. Figuratively it can be if congress wills it, which it has. But just as a corporation is not alive, congress also says a corporation is a person and the flag is alive. Are they? NO....

If the flag is not your own flag, it can be considered vandalism, which is illegal. Additionally, it is in violation of "Flag Code" contained in Federal Code. Violation of Flag Code is; however, not a punishable act. To read the "Flag Code," visit the Related Link.
I believe you meant how many stars were on the first US flag. There is no such thing as the American flag. The first US flag was made up of 13 white stars which were arranged in a circle on a blue background. There was also 13 stripes that was alternating red and white.

Silk is non living, for it does not reproduce, respire, or metabolize. It was once part of a living thing, the silkworm caterpillar, which spun the fibre of which the caterpillar made its cocoon. From this cocoon the silk strand was unspun to give us the silk thread.
