Yes, but it's is a small price compared to getting a dog from a breeder. Usuallt for dogs it's between $60 and $70 and for cats between $40 and $60. Puppies and kittens are usually slightly more expensive because of the higher demand for them. Senior animals are sold for less to help more of them to get adopted.

At some animal shelters, you can get your dog or cat for free. Other shelters ask for a small fee that just helps them cover their costs (i.e., food and medicine for the animals).

I adopted my two cats from the Manhattan AC&C (Animal Care and Control). At the AC&C, you pay $30 for one cat/dog, or $45 for two cats/dogs (buy one, get the next half-price, as it were).

Keep in mind, however, that no pet is truly "free." While the initial fee might not be present, caring for a pet over its lifetime can be very expensive. Be prepared to spend $1000 a year or more on a healthy pet for routine vet visits, food, boarding, toys, training, etc.
