Yes Eight Belles was euthanized on the track after breaking both front ankles in the 134th Kentucky Derby. Although, she did break her ankles in the beginning of the race, running on them throughout the race. It wasn't until after the race (she came in second), and when her jockey had just dismounted, that she collapsed.

Dr. Larry Bramlage, the Derby's on-call veterinarian, said the filly's injuries were too severe to even attempt to move her off the track.

"She didn't have a front leg to stand on to be splinted and hauled off in the ambulance, so she was euthanized," Bramlage said.
