People migrated in the past when the climate changed enough to interrupt their food supply and to escape war or to find a new territory to be safe in terms of their ethnicity or religion. In the US, migration from east to west was called manifest destiny, where people believed that land was available to them for their own farms and prosperity. These days, people leave for economic reasons, hoping to find a job that will provide a living in addition to all of the historic reasons. I believe that climate change will bring us more refugees as agriculture and living in places where the temperature or sea levels have risen so they have constant flooding.

What were the reasons some nomadic people decided to settle down?

They discovered farming. When a society begins to farm they don't need hunt or gather because food is available from farming. With the introduction of crops people could live together in groups for protection and create a culture with government, art, religion, music, trade, and invent new things. Hunting and gathering took a lot of time and effort to get enough food to survive, but with that gone time could be spent on other things and improve the quality of life for people.
