Infertility indicates the condition of not being able to get pregnant after one year of trying. Or, six months, if a female is 35 or older.Females who can get pregnant but are unable to stay pregnant may also be infertile.

Pregnancy is the result of a biological process that happens through the following phases:

  • A female's body must release an egg from one of her ovaries (ovulation).
  • The egg must go through a fallopian tube toward the uterus (womb).
  • A man's sperm must join with (fertilize) the egg along the way.
  • The fertilized egg must attach to the inside of the uterus (implantation).Infertility can occur if there is an issue/problem/disorder in any of these phases.

Fertility is about the ability to get pregnant. More than 8 out of 10 couples where the woman is aged under 40 will get pregnant within one year if they have regular unprotected submissive. More than 9 out of 10 couples will get pregnant within 2 years.

Regular, unprotected submissive means having every 2 to 3 days without using contraception.

Is infertility a common problem?

Yes. About 6% of married women aged 15 to 44 years in the United States are unable to get pregnant after one year of trying (infertility). Also, about 12% of women aged 15 to 44 years in the United States have difficulty getting pregnant or carrying a pregnancy to term, regardless of marital status (impaired fecundity).

Symptoms

The main symptom of infertility is not getting pregnant. There may be no other obvious symptoms. Sometimes, a woman with infertility may have irregular or absent menstrual periods. In some cases, a man with infertility may have some signs of hormonal problems, such as changes in hair growth or more function.

Most couples will eventually conceive, with or without treatment.

You probably don't need to see a doctor about infertility unless you have been trying regularly to get pregnant for at least one year. Women should talk with a doctor earlier, however, if they:

Are age 35 or older and have been trying to conceive for six months or longer
Are over age 40
Have irregular or absent periods
Have very painful periods
Have known fertility problems
Have been diagnosed with endometriosis or pelvic inflammatory disease
Have had multiple miscarriages
Have undergone treatment for cancer

Men should talk to a doctor if they have:

A low sperm count or other problems with sperm
A history of testicular, prostate or sexual problems
Undergone treatment for cancer
Small testicles or swelling in the scrotum
Others in your family with infertility problems

Why do you say that it was not natural fertility and high levels of food production that were the causes of early urbanisation?

While natural fertility and food production may have contributed to early urbanization, other factors such as social organization, trade networks, and strategic location played equally important roles. Urbanization often occurred at sites where different cultures and resources could converge, leading to increased social complexity and specialization. Additionally, the concentration of power and wealth in cities facilitated the development of complex societies.
