The first original Neanderthal bones to be identified as such were discovered in Neander Valley, Germany on August, 1856. They were found by a couple of quarry workers who thought they were the bones of a bear and handed them over to a local teacher and amateur naturalist named Johann Carl Fuhlrott. He identified the bones as human but recognized them to be different from usual human bones and showed them to Hermann Schaaffhausen who was a Professor of Anatomy. The specimen was named Neanderthal 1 and was jointly announced in 1857 as the remnants of an ancient human race, different from contemporary humans. Their discovery prompted the reassessment of already known bones, especially from museum collections which led to the reclassifying of many of these remains as belonging to Neanderthal. It is impossible to know which of these was truly the first to be found.
