Modern cars get rust protection from their paint, the fact that the sheet metal in the body is galvanized, the undercarriage usually gets and undercoat of some type and, of course, all the petroleum products that get used.

Galvanized steel is steel that has been electro-plated with zinc to prevent oxidation. Paint seals out air and water. Most undercoating products are petroleum derivatives of some type that are used to coat all of the steel under the car and seal out air and water.
