Cars have been driven on roads ever since they first appeared- mechanically propelled vehicles have been around for Centuries, from prototype clockwork cars built by Leonardo da vinci through to steam cars in the late 18th Century, up to petrol driven vehicles in late Victorian times.

However, in the early years, speed limits were very low (usually set at no more than 20mph), and up until about 1903, in the UK they had to be preceeded by a man walking in front of them holding a red flag, as a warning of their approach!!
