What is a Reliant Robin?

The Reliant Robin is a small three-wheeled British car with a fibreglass body, that was built by the Reliant Motor Company of Tamworth, in the English Midlands. Introduced in early 1973, they had 850cc 4-cylinder engines and were available as hatchback and estate versions- they replaced the earlier series of Reliant 3-wheelers known as the Regal, which were introduced in the mid-'60s and came as saloons, estates and van variants. Production ended of the first series in 1981, but a new version- the Rialto (which looked a bit like a three-wheeled Austin Metro)- was launched in 1989. Production finally ended in 2001; the last 65 cars to be built were special limited editions. Reliant also manufactured a four-wheeled version of the Robin known as the Kitten, as well as producing the classic '70s Scimitar sports car. The Robin was for many years regarded as a bit of a joke in England, and was often the butt of ridicule and derision. However, in recent years they have come to be regarded with more affection, and appreciated for the characterful, economical little vehicles they are. A Reliant Regal van featured as the company vehicle in the British comedy series 'Only Fools and Horses', starring David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst. Wikipedia has a very good page devoted to the cars, and there is a thriving Owner's Club. You also only needed a motorcycle licence to drive one of these contraptions.
