The serial number plate is on the front of the frame below the handlebars, behind the headlight. For 16-digit serial numbers, go to the Yamaha web site. For serial numbers less than 16 digits, take the number to a Yamaha dealer and ask for a search from Yamaha Japan.

Use the vin number it is on the lower left frame tube between the motor and the front end. Type in Yamaha vin numbers on your computer browser. When the site comes up just type the number in. It will be a 17 digit number with letters
The eight digit of your serial number
A 75 hp Mercury outboard, serial number OB9655687, I can not find on the serial number chart. One thing I see, is a seven digit serial number, with a OB prefix. The seven digit serial numbers, ( prior to 1985 ), had no prefix. Serial numbers with the prefix, ( OA,OB,OC, ect. ), have six digit serial numbers. Could there be an error in the serial number posted?
Its between an 81 - 83 model, in 84 Yamaha went to a 17 digit Vin number. Hope this helps. I have an 81 Virago with a 9 digit number on the frame and engine as well.
