Cebu was called Zebu, Sugbo and Zubu before the Spaniards came in 1521. It was a fishing village and a trading post with people from as far as Siam, China, Arabia and Malay islands coming to trade. People's houses were made of cut timber and had nipa shingles as roof.

Sugboanons have a developed culture before the Spanish colonizers arrived. The colonizers took notice of it when they landed at the port of Cebu. Cebu is the center of trade in the Philippine Islands. The Sugboanon language even influenced the rest of the Visayas. It should be noted that the King of Sugbo comes from Mindanao (see materials at Mindanao State University). Mindanao was the doorway to the Islands. The King of Cebu, Gumotan Humabon Gabon, wasn't a Muslim as the Muslim researcher noted in her documents. He was an animist.

My history professor said, that Cebu was already a progressive kingdom in its pre-hispanic time. They were already said to be trading with Chinese and Arabs at that time. Historians also believed that the itinerary of Magellan lead him next to Cebu because after the first mass in Limasawa island, the Datu there said to go to Cebu for it was a rich kingdom, to get some supplies.
Pre-Hispanic Filipinos mingled with their Asian neighbors during the Spanish colonization. As the Spanish settled in the country, they blended in with the Filipino community while still practicing their deep Spanish roots.
