The pediment atop Gravesend Old Town Hall was originally surmounted by three huge statues of 'Truth, Minerva and Justice'. These were removed in 1939 in case of air raids dislodging them. Sadly their whereabouts today is unknown.
The Easter Island stone statues, known as Moai, were carved by the Rapa Nui people between 1400 and 1650 AD. The statues were created to honor ancestors and represent spiritual and political figures within the community.
The Moai could be thousands of years older than commonly thought as some of them are buried in 20 feet of sediment which would take thousands of years to build up. (As stated by Dr Robert Schoch on the History channel show Ancient Aliens)
The small holes or pits on old concrete statues are likely due to a natural process called spalling. This occurs when water seeps into the concrete, freezes, and expands, causing small pieces of the surface to break off over time. Additionally, environmental factors such as air pollution or weathering can contribute to the deterioration of the concrete surface.
Destroying or damaging the statues is a form of vandalism. It is mostly due to hatred and hence defacing a statue would probably give some kind of crooked satisfaction to vandals. Nose being prominent on the face, it would first get the brunt of a hard object being used to deface it.
The most widely-accepted theory is that the statues were carved by the Polynesian colonizers of the island beginning by about A.D. 1000-1100. Source: Crystallinks
