First of all it is Roanoke. the colony was established by Sir Walter Raleigh and was evidentally well-settled- after a period of years a British ship landed there, found no traces of life- but scrawled on an isolated tree the word Croatan- believed to be an Indian Tribe. Was the colony wiped out in an Indian raid or series of battles? we do not know. anyhow the town still exists and is noted for N&W -now technically Norfolk Southern Railroad yards- so it is still around. In a sense it is a culture legend that in some ways paralells Atlantis- somebody wrote a book about the Roanoke colony- a reviewer gave a skimpy summary and added- Don"t know about the Colony, but the story sure is lost! glug Glug- plus some Indian war whoops, perhaps.
