Cetaceans, including whales, are descendents of the order Artiodactyl, or even-toed ungulates. Around 50 million years ago, primitive cetaceans began journeying into the sea and soon evolved adaptative structures for ocean life around 8 million years later. They soon changed from being semi-aquatic to fully-aquatic creatures and became more hydrodynamic. The first whale evolved from these primitive cetaceans.
